First of all, check out my previous reviews if you haven’t:
I feel like I’ve depleted the well of survival/humanity type manga, and I’m kind of getting a bit tired of them too. So for September and October, I mostly just read cheesy shoujo stuff (and yaoi/shonen ai, but I’m leaving that out as usual) which thankfully doesn’t take up much brain space hahaha
There are only so many kinds of characters and storylines right? ;-;
Anywho, some of these titles still have pretty cute art or some cheesy but still cute moments worth checking! So in no particular order….
Crayon Days (complete)
“Because she loved drawing and wanted to do something special, she went to a famous art school. And there she met the handsome and cool guy…” – Baka Updates
I was drawn to this manga because the art was cute, only realising later that it was by Chiba Kozue from whom I have read a whole bunch of other similar high school romance titles. As usual, this story is super naive and cliche, but I liked the little side story added with the introduction of a talking bird.
Gal Kadou (ongoing)
“Fifteen-year-old Kuzuhara Tsubomi’s family is a hundred years old and counting, and still a prestigious family. Tsubomi is not only the only heir to the Kuzuhara family, but she is also a delinquent kogal who won’t listen to her father. For that reason, her father hired her a tutor in order to make her a better heiress.” – MyAnimeList
The story is pretty predictable, but the over-dramatic bara-shonen character provides a little humour to the storyline. Although it was pretty obvious what would happen, I still can’t stomach how she became all tame because of the bara-shonen character. She wasn’t even that rebellious :<
GDGD Dogs (ongoing)
“Tezuka Kanna, 15, is a girl who loves manga. For that reason, she specifically enrolls in a course for manga in Tokiwa High School as a freshman! No one knows though, that she is already a debuting manga artist. …But wait, what’s this?! Three handsome guys suddenly appear, and what’s more they know!!! Kanna (God) vs. Those Guys (Devils)!!! What would happen next?!” – Baka-Updates
At the time I picked this, watashi ni xx shinasai was just starting to pick up the pace again. Because I was impatient waiting for the next chapter of watashi ni xx shinasai, I started reading this story. Don’t think I got further than the first chapter. The story just seemed like all of the “selling” points of watashi ni xx shinasai, in a different situation, haphazardly thrown together .-.
Redeeming point: the art is still cute af.
Haru (Hal) (complete)
“Kurumi’s heart was broken by the sudden death of her boyfriend in a tragic airplane accident. Forced to carry on without her beloved Hal, she fell into a reclusive and joyless existence. Kurumi had given up on the world, but a brilliant scientist devised a plan to win her back. By melding futuristic technology with the binary equivalent of human emotion, they created an ultra-lifelike robotic surrogate to take Hal’s place—and lure Kurumi from her shroud of solitude. Resistant at first, this shattered beauty slowly yielded to her feelings of longing—and took comfort in the company of a robot. Though their unique bond grew stronger with each passing day, Kurumi and Hal would soon discover that nothing about their artificial love story was quite as it seemed.” – MyAnimeList
I. Loved. This. The art was beautiful, and out of the recent manga I have read, this is the only one that took its time revealing the story. Absolutely beautiful short manga.
And what’s better, there’s also an anime adaptation for those that cbf reading! Don’t know if it would be quite as good in anime though…
Haru x Kiyo (ongoing)
“Although Koharu is a little taller than the average person, she’s a 15-year-old girl who lives a much simpler life than the average person. Having no experience with love, she thought she’d spend her days peacefully with her group of ordinary friends. However, a destined encounter will change Koharu…!!” – Baka-Updates
Remember how I said at the beginning of this post that there are manga I follow just because it’s so damn cute and even though it’s cliche as heck, the cuteness keeps me going? Well this is one of those manga! The story is very light-hearted and funny, and Koharu and Mineta are just so cute~~~
Rating: 5/5 (as far as these kinds of shojo mangas go)
“In the story, there are certain individuals known as “graineliers” who produce “seeds” that conceal various powers. A boy named Lucas lives at his disposal with the powers from these “seeds”.” – Baka-Updates
This manga is set in an interesting alternate universe. The magick is not strongly developed at the start of the story, but rather is slowly revealed. In fact, in some sense the setting of this story reminds me of Shingeki no Kyojin? haha
Anywho, the art is rather nice, and the story is actually pretty exciting. If only it could release faster!!
Kokoro Botan (ongoing)
“During the high school entrance ceremony, Koga Eito from the special class helps Kasuga Niina from her poor health. His gentle manner captivates Niina, making her confess her feeling towards him. Thus, the trials in love of this couple begin. As time passes, Niina finds it difficult to continue loving him since there are instances when he seems to be playing with her feelings. For her, going out with Koga may bring a grim future to her.”
Typical shoujo manga with the typical cute and naive bubbly heroine, but the art is cute so I still read it ;w;
That’s about all I can say really haha…
Momoyama Kyodai (ongoing)
“Arima and his little sister Chihiro are the twins of the Momoyama family. Six years ago, they’ve overheard their parents say “We will tell them the truth when they turn 16.” The two worried that they might be adopted during those six years, but the truth they learn on their 16th birthday is even more shocking! Also includes an award-winning one-shot.” – Baka-Updates
Warning of incest romance! The story is pretty straightforward and predictable, but the art is cute ^^
The manga is actually complete, but I’m reading on mangafox and it’s still ongoing there…
“Upon first sight Machida Yuki knows that she doesn’t want anything to do with Naruse Shou, but how can she keep her cool when he is a part of the basketball club she manages?” – Baka-Updates
This manga is like a dramatic slice-of-life style. The heroine is super genki! Although I’m not particularly partial to the art style, the story is good for some light reading ^^
I also read the following, but um, can’t be bothered reviewing them because darn this post was long. Some of these are better than others. Natsumeki, Nobody Cry, Noragami, Runway no Koibito, and Parasyte were interesting, but feel free to check out the others too!
Nobody Cry (complete)
P to JK (ongoing)
Pure Love Labyrinth (ongoing)
Runway no Koibito (ongoing)
Shiny Doll (ongoing)
Soshite, Hare ni Naru (ongoing)
Tobenai Tori (ongoing)
