I had the opportunity earlier this year to experience the high tea service at Hippopotamus with Icey. Hippopotamus is the restaurant located in the artistic Museum Hotel on the Wellington waterfront. It had amazing views, and even better service!
We were first sat down with menus of the tea options, and a glass of chilled water. A comfortable few minutes later, a waiter came back and took our orders. I really liked how they gave us sufficient time to decide, but weren’t absent (like how some places you’d have to wave someone over).
A short time later, our delicacies were served. It’s one of the most beautiful high tea sets I’ve had!
Everything was tasty and flavourful. Despite its looks, the quiche was delicious. The club sandwiches were also really nice, and the capsicum cups subtle. The salmon pots were slightly on the dry side, but not far off what I assume they were intending to aim for. Overall, it was a very comfortable course of savouries.
The chocolate cupcakes were absolutely beautiful and the cream on top was perfect. The lemon meringue mini pies were tangy and fragrant, while the green tea eclairs paled in comparison.
The top layer was perfectly light in texture, weight, and flavor. The pot was light and a great palate cleanser (if only I had that first), and the rose mousse was beautiful, with the lightest crumbling base.
The tea was really nice – I don’t remember what I ordered anymore, but it was really delicious. No wonder they won the Dilmah high tea challenge? 😛
Also, the waiter took the tea pots away when the tea had been served, but remembered to top up our teas and never got the teas mixed up! I was so impressed!
Finally, when we had cleared everything, two Lavender macarons were served. I love how the service ran from the moment we stepped in, to the moment we left.
I would 100% recommend high tea at Hippopotamus!
